Origination Manager / Market Expert

Summary Description

The Origination team leads Scout’s efforts to develop and cultivate client relationships, structure offtake arrangements, negotiate and structure Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (VPPAs) and other contractual structures for our growing portfolio of development projects. We integrate knowledge from other teams at Scout to develop a pricing strategy and deal structure that meets the needs of our clients and meets our internal underwriting standards.

As Scout’s Origination Manager, you will play an important role in power marketing efforts at Scout. You will primarily be responsible for cultivating client relationships, assisting /conducting PPA negotiations, financially structuring offtake arrangements and revenue-side models as well as developing Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and bilateral outreach proposals.

Each day will incorporate both proactive and responsive activities across a range of projects, clients, and deals. Key aspects of your work will include the following:

  • Support the structuring of complex transactions, including conducting multiple types of quantitative and risk-based analysis. You will analyze the impacts of covariance and basis, provide financial analysis on contractual terms and the financial impact of various deal structures to inform our negotiating position.
  • Build relationships with clients to identify and create opportunities for Scout projects to align with client needs. You will interface with clients to understand their needs, convey information, discuss alternate structures, and the economics behind those structures.
  • Build dynamic collaborative relationships with other teams within Scout, including Development, Interconnection, M&A, and Operations to solicit input during the solicitation process and to ensure adherence to contractual terms during project operations. As COVID requirements ease, this will include establishing a strong Scout presence at conferences and other industry events.
  • Support major negotiations through analysis and relationship management with the intent of growing into a deal leader on smaller negotiations within the first 1-2 years.
  • Track key market trends that are shaping contractual structures (e.g., ISO requirements, new technologies) and client requirements and integrating that knowledge to create structures that equitably distribute risk.

In addition, you will periodically work in these areas:

  • Complete REC trades on an as-needed basis.
  • Respond to and/or help organize responses to RFPs and develop other proposal documentation.
  • Maintain Salesforce database and history of client interaction.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

You will report to the Director of Origination. You will work alongside an Associate who conducts analysis, coordinates and contributes to RFP responses, and who interfaces frequently and collaborates well with all other teams at Scout.

Qualifications

You are a deal-oriented, analytically minded professional who likes to work with a wide range of people and is passionate about the ways that renewable energy will make the world a better place. You have a good understanding of risk in contractual terms and are creative in the way you manage that risk while meeting different clients’ needs.

Subject-Matter Expertise:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; MBA is a plus.
  • 5+ years of power experience with 2+ years in middle marketing or junior origination work in the power sector; renewables-specific experience is preferred.
  • Current knowledge of renewable energy markets and key drivers (e.g., policies, technologies, dynamics in local markets), especially for wind, solar, and storage.
  • Ability to cultivate relationships with potential counterparties and to leverage your own book of strong client relationships across markets: multiple ISOs/RTOs, retailers, utilities (IOU, munis, and co-ops), and commercial and industrial clients.
  • Previous experience supporting successful client negotiations, including contractual analysis; previous deal leadership is a plus.
  • Experience in analyzing and structuring complex offtake agreements in the North American market (e.g., PPAs, proxy revenue swaps, hedges).
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel; proficiency in the rest of the Microsoft Office Suite.

Compensation

Target base salary: $90,000 - $140,000 (negotiable)
