Mustaches for a Cause: Movember at Scout

Kara Lucyk Read time: 3 Minutes

This November, Scouts are once again seeing some fresh (and perhaps amusing) facial hair around the office as the company participates in the Movember movement for the fourth straight year to raise money and awareness for the Movember Foundation -- started in 2003 -- which tackles issues surrounding men's health, such as mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.

Joining the estimated 6 million people who now participate in Movember, Scouts who are inclined commit to growing out their best mustache (their "Mo"), which they can use as a talking point to encourage friends, family, and colleagues to make a donation on their own or to the Scout-wide Movember Foundation page. Growing a mustache is certainly not the only way to participate, as may Scouts choose to "Move for Movember" instead, challenging themselves to run, walk, or exercise throughout the month as another way to raise funds and awareness. These donations support groundbreaking research, mental healthy programs, and awareness campaigns aimed at helping men live longer, healthier lives.

"When I joined Scout over a year ago, it was an opportunity to get involved in a great cause to support mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer; I try and support research any chance I can," says Senior Procurement Associate Matthew Beery, who organizes the event internally.

Movember is more than just bad mustaches; it's about starting conversations that might otherwise be difficult, especially around men's mental and physical health. By coming together as a team, we're breaking down stigma, raising awareness, and supporting resources that make a real difference in the lives of men both inside and outside Scout.

This year, we hope to surpass last year's donation total of $7,032 and have encouraged all Scouts to get involved and active.

"As a team, we are able to tackle and raise awareness for important issues facing men," says Beery, underscoring the importance of rallying a strong team behind you in the face of challenges that are often faced in silence, like mental health and illness.

At the end of the month, we host an awards ceremony for the best mustache photo and most activity logged by Scouts, promoting some healthy competition for a good cause and giving the team a reason to come together and share some laughs.
